阿蘇五岳・烏帽子岳の中腹に位置し、200年以上の歴史を誇る湯治宿。 最大の特徴は、全国でも珍しい足元湧出（浴槽の底から直接湧き出す）の「すずめの湯」。湯は青みがかった乳白色で、硫黄の香りが漂い、皮膚病やリウマチ、アトピーなどに効能があるとされている。加水・加温を一切しない源泉かけ流しで、湯温や泉質の異なる複数の浴槽（露天・内湯）が楽しめる。混浴露天風呂は水着着用必須で、女性や家族連れでも安心。
