Sawato Onsen Uchimi Ryokan in Rifu Town, Miyagi Prefecture, has a hot spring said to have soothed injured soldiers during Sakanoue no Tamuramaro's campaign about 1,200 years ago. The alkaline cold mineral spring has a pH of 9.0 and a smooth feel. This ryokan, whose cuisine is prepared by the owner as chef, has been passed down by the Uchimi family since the Taisho era. It is a quiet base for visiting Sendai and Matsushima.
